The Language of a Son

Hebrews 1: 1, 2 (TPT)

1 Throughout our history God has spoken to our ancestors by his prophets in many different ways. The revelation he gave them was only a fragment at a time, building one truth upon another.

2 But to us living in these last days, God now speaks to us openly in the language of a Son, the appointed Heir of everything, for through him God created the panorama of all things and all time.

Only the language of a Son can bring clarity and understanding regarding the nature of God. The prophets of previous generations carried a message from God, but it was only a glimpse of one aspect of His nature. However, when God spoke to us through His Son, He fully revealed Himself to us, for Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). He is the full expression of God in bodily form.

Typically, a child knows what their father is like. Try as he may to portray a certain image to others, who a man is behind closed doors, is seen and known by his children. This is also true of God. Many have spoken of Him, but the One who dwells with Him fully knows what He is like and has revealed Him to us. No partial understanding, no glimpse of God obscured by human reasoning and imperfection, but a full description of His nature and a revelation of His heart.

As the uniquely cherished Son held close to the Father’s heart, Jesus is the exact representation of the Father. His life and ministry showcase how God thinks and what He desires. Through Jesus, we see God interact with man. How God responds to brokenness, heartache and sin is revealed in full color, real life situations. Yet, Jesus was more than someone to stand back and observe. He was the friend of tax collectors and sinners. The outcasts of His day were welcomed and accepted by the Divine. The judged and condemned were forgiven and freed, the sick were healed, the broken restored and the dead were raised. Jesus forgave, healed, rescued, and restored because that is the heart of God. He is God’s will in action and God’s love on display.

Once more, God walked where man walked. His footsteps, previously heard within the tranquility of Eden, were heard within the heartache and toil of a fallen world. As man, God fellowshipped with the ones He made and loved. No longer disconnected and distant, He talked, ate, laughed and cried with the ones He longed for.

The language of a son isn’t about reciting rules or dictating protocol, but the unveiling of the heart. Prophets spoke of God; the Son revealed Him. Prophets released fragments of truth, while the Son spoke openly through all that He said and did. Jesus repeatedly said, “You have heard it said, but I say to you…” (Matthew 5). His words brought freedom and life, because they spoke of the One who is life.

Knowing what Jesus reveals, rather than relying solely on what others have said, is the only reliable source of understanding the true nature of God. Since the Garden of Eden, Satan has been deceiving humanity about who God is. These lies are manifest in humanism and have infiltrated religious teachings. However, as we see who Jesus is and embrace the revelation He shared, these falsehoods and misconceptions are effectively challenged and replaced.

If what we’ve been taught doesn’t align with who Jesus is and what He’s said, then we’re not hearing the language of a Son. Others may share their perspective based on what they see and know, but if it contradicts the revelation Jesus brings, it’s not the language of a Son.

The voice we listen to dictates the lifestyle we lead. Words of condemnation and fear bring bondage. Words of command produce servants. It is words of love that generates sons. The language of a Son is the language of connection, an invitation to know the One who came to dwell with us. Everything Jesus said and did reveals God’s heart and invites us into relationship. He is a God we can know. This God who inhabits eternity has dwelt in our world. This glorious One, enthroned in splendor, put on flesh and lived amongst us. Fully divine, He revealed the wonder of His world and invited us to draw near. He seeks hearts, not temples. He is the Son who came so that we can become sons and daughters of the Father He sought to reveal.

Consider:

  • Do the things you believe about God, align with what is revealed in the life of Christ? Jesus said, “if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father” (Jn. 14:9).

  • What language do you speak? Do you release over others the words of a servant or a son?

Prayer Prompts:

  • Father, is there a lie that I am believing, that limits me from hearing Your heart towards me?

  • Jesus, how do you want to express the language of a son through me?
